Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has begun efforts to disinfect Velana International Airport (VIA).
MACL said efforts are underway to disinfect VIA, as part of the measures taken to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Maldives and to ensure the safety of passengers and staff at the airport.
VIA is one of the busiest airports in South Asia, with a large number of domestic and international flights as well as private jets operating at the airport on a daily basis. One of the earliest measures taken by the administration following the global outbreak of COVID-19 was installing facilities to screen passengers entering Maldives through VIA. An isolation facility has also been developed at the airport to transfer individuals showing COVID-19 like symptoms.
While 13 positive cases have been found in Maldives so far, MACL has been taking important measures to contain the spread of the virus in the country. As such, the company has set up a coordination centre dedicated to COVID-19 and has arranged facilities to check the temperatures of all departing passengers. Furthermore, MACL said regular disinfection of airport vehicles are carried out daily.
