WHO commends COVID-19 preventive measures in Maldives

Representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to the Maldives Dr. Arvind Mathur has commended Maldives for its preventive and proactive measures to contain the global COVID-19 outbreak.

Speaking to PSM News, Dr. Arvind Mathur said the government along with various stakeholders have taken significant measures in advance to contain the spread of the virus in Maldives, despite its smaller size. Mathur remarked the efforts taken by all respective authorities in the Maldives has been commendable. He further added the public has also been a good example to the world, as they observe the guidelines and instructions issued by the authorities.

The WHO representative further said the steps taken by the administration has adhered to the WHO guidelines and the measures have been very impressive during the State of Public Health Emergency in the Maldives. He said one of the most remarkable measures has been a transparent system to timely communicate the right information to the public in attempts to nullify spread of false information.

Mathur applauded the work of the administration to aware the public and the information shared with the public on various platforms including regular press conferences, social media, radio and television. He particularly highlighted the establishment of a National Emergency operations Centre (NEOC) and a Technical Advisory Board in the fight against COVID-19.

The WHO representative said everyone has a personal responsibility to contain the spread and called the public to maintain social distancing, not to be complacent on taking proactive measures. He additionally called the public to strictly observe and follow all instructions from public health authorities.
