Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) has revealed approximately 11,000 resort employees have been placed on no-pay leaves by resorts following the COVID-19 pandemic.
TEAM, which actively advocates for the rights of tourism employees in Maldives, stated the association has been receiving a large number of complaints from employees who are being placed on no-pay leaves by resorts due to the losses incurred on the tourism industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, the association noted approximately 11,000 resort employees are on no-pay leave, adding this is unacceptable treatment of employees by resorts. The association noted the issue has been reported to authorities.
While a number of employers are taking measures to cut salaries of staff in order to overcome financial losses, Labour Relations Authority (LRA) has stated some companies are acting in violation of the Employment Act. LRA requested companies to consult with the authority before taking any measures and urged to act in accordance to the Employment Act.
LRA has also asked all employers to provide details of any decisions taken on the status of an employee since March 1. The authority said employers must share these details with the authority before April 15.
Furthermore, LRA noted important measures are being taken by the government to protect employees’ rights. Noting the introduction of special financial packages to help businesses overcome the current situation, LRA said the government will prioritise companies which protect the rights of their staff when providing assistance through these packages.
