Government requests local ISPs to reduce internet costs

The government has requested Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Maldives to provide free internet to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), quarantine and isolation faculties.

The administration has also requested Maldivian ISPs, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, to assist the public by reducing the cost of the internet at a time the public has been encouraged to stay indoors. The request of the government includes providing free internet to NEOC and cell phones used at the NEOC, providing free internet for individuals put in self-isolation by the Director-General of Public Health.

The government has also asked the service providers to offer more data allowances and reduce the cost of data boosters that are additionally purchased, introduce a daily uncapped allowance to 70% fixed broadband customers, and 50% mobile broad band customers, once the data package runs out, offer better speed than the 512 kbps currently offered customer when the data allowance runs out. The government made the request to assist the staff working from home, students staying online and people generally using the internet during this time of staying indoors.
