Crime rate goes down in Maldives amid COVID-19 pandemic

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has revealed the crime rate in Maldives has gone down amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to PSM News, Commissioner Hameed noted Maldives Police Service (MPS) has been more active on the streets following the situation of COVID-19 in Maldives, noting it could be the main reason behind the reduced crime rate. He said the suspension of flights and restriction of travel have obstructed the narcotics networks operating in the country, adding it has also contributed to the reduced crime rate.

The commissioner stated MPS has devised plans in preparation for the social problems that may arise due to drug addicts being unable to secure drugs during this period. He urged the public to immediately contact the police if any crimes have been identified.

While the government has imposed a partial lockdown from 1700 hours to 2000 hours every day in the Greater Male' region, MPS has begun joint efforts with the relevant authorities to counter the social issues that may arise due to the lockdown, such as domestic violence. MPS has established an online portal to report crimes without going to a police station.
