33 isolated after returning foreigner tests positive for COVID-19

National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has stated 33 individuals who came into contact with the foreign national who tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from the Maldives, have been placed under isolation.

Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of NEOC Mohamed Mabrook Azeez revealed the isolated individuals include the staff of the resort where he stayed, the crew of the vessel who transported him to the airport as well as airport ground staff. Mabrook said samples have been collected from 21 of the 33 isolated individuals and contact tracing is still ongoing.

The spokesperson expected the number of contacts to increase further once contact tracing is completed. He stated Joali Maldives Resort and Bodufushi Maldives Resort are currently under monitoring until contact tracing is complete as the tourist had visited both resorts.

So far, 19 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives, while 4 patients are currently undergoing treatment in the country and 2 from abroad. The four patients receiving treatment in the Maldives recently arrived from the UK.
