The state revenue generated through Green Tax has declined in February 2020, compared to the same month last year.
Ministry of Finance revealed the state received USD 5 million as Green Tax in February 2020, compared to USD 5.13 million in February 2019. USD 4.86 million was generated as Green Tax from resorts and guesthouses, while USD 140,000 was generated as Green Tax from safaris. Kaafu Atoll contributed the largest share of Green Tax in February with USD 1.68 million, followed by Alifu Dhaalu Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll.
Green Tax was introduced in 2016 to contribute to environmental protection projects in the Maldives. Tourists at resorts, hotels and safaris are charged USD 6 as Green Tax, while tourists at guesthouses are charged USD 3.
