Ministry of Tourism has revealed there are currently about 1,000 tourists in the Maldives.
The latest statistics released by the ministry revealed there are 938 tourists in the country, including 200 tourists who have been unable to return to their countries due to global travel restrictions. The ministry stated the remaining tourists are voluntarily staying in the Maldives due to the lockdowns imposed in their countries.
Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed stated the ministry is closely monitoring the situation of tourists who are currently in the Maldives. He revealed rooms from five-star resorts are currently released at a rate between USD 300 and USD 900 per night, while rooms of ultra-luxury private resorts are released at approximately USD 3,000 per night.
The rates of Maldivian resorts have gone down following the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, room rates from five-star resorts were between USD 1,500 and USD 3,000, while rates at ultra-luxury resorts were at USD 10,000.
The government has been imposing stringent measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives. In this regard, all on-arrival visas have been suspended leading to a shutdown of the majority of tourist operations in the country.
