Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd (MIFCO) has revealed the aim is to continue purchasing tuna without interruption during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to PSM News regarding the changes in the fisheries sector, Managing Director of MIFCO Nawaz Rasheed said the aim is to continue purchasing tuna from local fishermen without interruption, adding purchasing will be continued as much as the storage capacity enables. He said the biggest challenge faced by MIFCO will be storing tuna unless timely exporting mechanisms are established.
Furthermore, Nawaz added although no difficulties are faced in purchasing tuna, some difficulties have been faced by MIFCO in getting yellowfin tuna from local fishermen. He added discussions are held with relevant authorities to ease all difficulties. He noted priority is given on storage, processing, and other operational activities, adding importance is also given to protect the human resource of the sector.
