The government of Maldives has informed the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) of the efforts undertaken to ensure the rights of migrant workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The information was shared with the Director-General of IOM Antonio Vitorino by the Maldivian Representative to the United Nations (UN) Hala Hameed.
During the virtual meeting, information was provided to Director-General Vitorino on the work being done in the Maldives to ensure migrant workers have access to all essential services without discrimination. The Maldivian representative also noted the initiation of the government to assist expatriate workers who wish to return home amid the pandemic and to provide better accommodation facilities to expatriates living in congested spaces. She also noted the efforts to create awareness on COVID-19 among expatriates by conveying messages in their languages.
IOM is an UN-affiliated body that works to ensure the rights of migrants around the world and to promote international cooperation in migration issues.
