Bangladesh to send food and medical aid to the Maldives

The government of Bangladesh has decided to send 100 metric tonnes of food, medical supplies and other medical equipment to help the fight against COVID-19 in the Maldives.

A navy ship will carry and deliver the supply to the Maldives amid the pandemic. The assistance from Bangladesh comes after telephone discussions between the foreign ministers of the Maldives and Bangladesh regarding providing assistance and evacuation of Maldivian students in Bangladesh.

Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has thanked the government and the people Bangladesh for the generous assistance. He stated that assistance is a representation of the close friendship between the Maldives and Bangladesh.

Many neighbouring countries are providing assistance to the Maldives during the spread of COVID-19. Previously, India had donated food and medical supplies to the Maldives, including 500 metric tonnes of sugar and 993 metric tons of rice. Additionally, China and the UK have also provided the Maldives with medical supplies and equipment.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the country has the necessary food and medical supplies required for the current situation.
