Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has warned criminal action will be taken against individuals who spread false information on COVID-19 in the Maldives.
In a tweet, the commissioner said Maldives Police Service (MPS) will be taking criminal action against those who spread false information on COVID-19 which serves no legitimate purpose, except creating fear and panic among the public. He urged all citizens to refrain from such expressions and actions.
The commissioner added MPS will also take criminal action against individuals who publicly harass people with false accusations or misinformation pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives. He noted the objective of taking action against such individuals is to protect the dignity and privacy of all.
The warning from the police commissioner came after an increase of unverified pictures and speculations on social media regarding COVID-19 patients. Additionally, false information is being spread to harass healthcare workers and to incite fear and hatred among the public.
National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has also advised journalists not to press matters based on social media claims during the daily press conferences. NEOC has stated such questions will not be entertained.
