President acknowledges the generosity of Bangladeshi government

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has acknowledged the generosity of the government of Bangladesh.

President Solih discussed the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina over a telephone call. Both leaders apprised the challenges confronted in the respective countries due to the spread of COVID-19 and the measures their governments are taking in response.

The president warmly acknowledged the recent generosity of the Bangladeshi government, expressing gratitude for the assistance in repatriating hundreds of Maldivians who had been resident in Bangladesh and for the medical assistance and equipment provided to the Maldives.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated she was more than happy to be of assistance, remarking that she felt it is the duty of the regional leaders to support each other during these adverse times. She further remarked that her government stands ready to assist in any other capacity from ensuring regional food security to sending medical personnel.

In light of the many Bangladeshi expatriates who are resident in the Maldives, President Solih stated he would not differentiate between foreigners and citizens, as his administration implements measures to contain the pandemic. The president acknowledged several Bangladeshi expatriates have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives, in addition to many Maldivians. He assured the prime minister the health and security of everyone currently in the Maldives is the highest priority of his administration.

Ending the call, the president reiterated the warm bonds of affection between the people and the governments of the two countries.
