Perception on COVID-19 patients must change: WHO Representative

Representative of World Health Organisation (WHO) to the Maldives Dr. Arvind Mathur has highlighted the importance of changing the perception of COVID-19 patients, noting the real enemy is the virus which causes the disease.

Speaking to PSM News, the WHO representative said one of the most important steps in controlling the outbreak of a disease is providing valid information on the disease to the public. Dr. Mathur noted the government of Maldives and media have been doing a good job in conveying truthful information on COVID-19 to the public, although panic and fear have led to some undesirable outcomes. As such, he noted the perception on COVID-19 patients needs to change, as the real enemy is the virus itself rather than the patients.

Speaking further, the WHO representative praised the proactive measures taken by the Maldives to curb the spread of COVID-19. In this regard, Dr. Mathur noted the installation of thermal cameras in airports and establishing medical facilities in preparation for an outbreak had positive outcomes in the country. He also urged the public to continue observing personal safety measures by staying indoors and practicing physical distancing.

Furthermore, Dr. Mathur stated mental health needs to be given as much importance as physical health as mental and psychological breakdowns can be expected during this situation. He called on the public to seek help from mental health facilities if encountering any such problems, noting there is no reason to hesitate in seeking help for psychological problems.
