Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced it will take action against shops that do not open after attaining permits to operate during the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male' Region.
During the lockdown enforced since April 15, shops in the Greater Male' Region can only be kept open after getting a permit from MPS. A different permit is also issued to individuals who require shopping for essential items.
In addition to keeping shops closed despite authorisation, MPS also stated some shops have a higher number of staff working in the shops than the number permitted, which is also a violation.
MPS has been issuing three types of permits for businesses during the lockdown. They are vehicle permits, support staff permits, and delivery staff permits. Businesses can request for permits via an online portal.
The lockdown announced in the Greater Male Region until May 14 is expected to be extended as the number of cases projected is expected to be very high towards the end of the month. MPS stated a total of 171 individuals have been arrested for violating the lockdown order.
