National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has stated the government has not decided to impose stricter lockdown measures in the Greater Male' Region.
Speaking at the daily press briefing, Spokesperson of NEOC Mabrook Azeez negated social media claims, affirming no discussions have been carried to impose stricter measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. He further explained the measures from the government is based on sound research on the spread and the evolving situation of the outbreak.
The spokesperson stated the current lockdown measures are deemed suitable considering the current situation in the Maldives, despite a surge is expected in the coming few days. He said no such plans have been made by the government, and nor has any such discussions taken place.
The government has urged the public to take precautions, practice social distancing and stay indoors as a surge is expected in the coming two weeks. Projections from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) indicate the number of positive cases would reach its peak during the coming two weeks.
HPA has extended the State of Public Health Emergency declared in the Maldives until May 31 and has also extended the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male' Region until May 14.
