Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has revealed over 400 individuals have responded to the call by the government for retired healthcare workers and medical students to assist the efforts of the Maldives against COVID-19.
Health Minister Ameen said the government called upon retired healthcare workers as well individuals currently studying in the field of medicine to join the healthcare field as the country is facing a shortage of healthcare workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The minister said over 400 individuals have responded to the call and joined the field, noting the initiative shows their commitment and determination to serve the country and its people.
Furthermore, the health minister said the pandemic has highlighted the need for more locals to be trained in the healthcare field. Noting the primary interest of every healthcare worker during a pandemic would be to serve their nation, the minister said the Maldives needs more local doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to serve the nation during such times.
Minister Ameen noted the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in dark and difficult times for the world, unforeseen for the last 100 years. He said the work being done by healthcare workers during this pandemic while risking their own lives must be continuously acknowledged and appreciated.
Highlighting the role of nurses in treating COVID-19 patients, the health minister remarked nurses undertake extraordinary work in providing first-hand care for patients despite all the difficulties and challenges. He expressed pride in efforts of nurses as well as all healthcare workers in serving the country amid the pandemic, adding their contribution will be remembered fondly forever.
