Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has stated other health and social issues cannot be neglected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at a virtual meeting of health ministers organised by World Health Organisation (WHO), Minister Ameen said the world cannot afford to neglect other health and social issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as negligence of such issues could lead to further problems in the future. The minister said special attention must be given to prevent the risk of other diseases and to resolve social issues, even when fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. He said this is the right time for all countries to increase investments for the health sector and strengthen the structure of the overall healthcare system.
During the virtual meeting, Minister Ameen highlighted the economic and financial impact of COVID-19 on the Maldives. In this regard, he noted the impact on the tourism and fisheries sectors has badly affected the economic situation of the Maldives.
In his speech, Minister Ameen thanked the assistance and support received by different countries amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the minister highlighted the continuous support received by India and China in overcoming the crisis. He also called on the international community to work together in solidarity in order to overcome the pandemic.
