State Trading Organisation (STO) has stated there are no difficulties in supplying staple food to islands.
Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director of STO Hussain Amr said staples are being continuously supplied to all islands through STO staples agents, based on the demand. The managing director said the demand for staples grew considerably during Ramadan, noting over 70,000 sacks of staples were supplied to Male’ and the island within the last month. He noted STO had prepared for the increased demand by establishing an additional staples warehouse in Male’ and storing sufficient stocks.
Furthermore, the managing director noted while the delivery of staples from the warehouse to local shops and vessels is usually provided by private parties, STO took over delivery during the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male’ Region. However, he said STO will issue an announcement on June 1 to seek private parties to deliver staples, upon the eased lockdown restrictions.
