COVID-19 has triggered a raise in psychological issues: IGMH

Centre for Mental Health of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has stated the global COVID-19 pandemic is causing serious psychological distress to many in the Maldives.

Speaking at the daily press briefing held at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), Psychologist at the Centre for Mental Health Dr. Afiya Ali said the number of people seeking psychological support has tripled between March to May this year, with 999 seeking support at the Centre for Mental Health during this period. This number was 330 during the same period last year.

Dr. Afiya further stated World Health Organisation (WHO) expects a post traumatic disorder in many following the end of the pandemic. The doctor attested a large majority of the Maldivians have the ability to cope with traumatic situations and serious disasters. However, she said some still needs considerable attention as they are more prone to risks.

Noting the people who used to seek psychological support before the pandemic are more likely to be impacted by the current situation, Dr. Afiya stressed on the importance of seeking professional support should an individual be undergoing any distress. She also urged the public to constantly communicate and check on one another.

Additionally, Dr. Afiya instructed the public to exercise regularly and eat healthy food in an effort to be safe and healthy. She also advised the public to refrain from solely depending on media, and rather follow instructions from authorities.
