National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has stated the risk of COVID-19 in the Maldives has not been eliminated, despite the reducing number of new cases reported on a daily basis.
Speaking at the daily press briefing, Spokesperson of NEOC Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said it is not safe to assume the risk of COVID-19 is eliminated, despite the reducing number of cases. Mabrook said a new surge in cases could still be detected in the coming days, following the first phase of easing the lockdown restrictions. He urged the public to continue observing personal safety measures in accordance with the instructions given by the authorities.
The first case of COVID-19 was reported in the Maldives on March 7, from Kuredu Island Resort and Spa. The first case from Male' City was recorded on April 15, leading to a community transmission of COVID-19 in the Greater Male' Region.
Over 1,900 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the Maldives thus far, including 8 deaths. Meanwhile, over 700 individuals have made a full recovery from COVID-19 in the Maldives.
