The government has officially concluded the establishment of COVID-19 treatment facilities in five regions of the Maldives.
The last COVID-19 treatment facilities were established in Gan, Laamu Atoll and Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll. A virtual ceremony was held to mark the completion of the facilities which was attended by Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen.
The 47-beds COVID-19 treatment facility in Gan consists of 20 ICU beds, 15 isolation beds and 12 quarantine beds. The COVID-19 treatment facility in Villingili consists of 23 beds. Ministry of Health stated testing arrangements and ventilators will be made available and healthcare professionals will be trained before opening the facilities for the public.
The government had previously established COVID-19 treatment facilities in Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll and Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll. Moreover, additional facilities were established in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City and Addu City.
The government launched efforts to establish treatment facilities across the country as part of efforts to minimise the dependency on the capital, Male' City, for COVID-19 treatment.
