Maldives records highest daily number of COVID-19 cases since end of lockdown

Maldives has recorded the highest daily number of COVID-19 cases since the lockdown restrictions were eased last month.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed 77 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 between 1800hrs, July 24 and 1800hrs, July 25. Of the 77 cases, 56 patients are Maldivians, in addition to 20 Bangaladeshi nationals and 1 Indian national. The previous highest daily COVID-19 cases since the end of lockdown was recorded on July 12, which was 67 cases, including 52 Maldivians.

Mostly foreigners tested positive for COVID-19 during the early stages of the outbreak in the Maldives. However, the number of foreigners testing positive for COVID-19 in the country has significantly decreased following the proactive preventive measures implemented by the government to contain the outbreak among expatriates. Meanwhile, the number of Maldivians testing positive for COVID-19 has increased in the past few weeks amid the ease in lockdown restrictions imposed in the Greater Male' Region.

The Maldives reported its first COVID-19 cases on March 7. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has risen to 3,302 and the total active cases are 688. A total of 2,534 individuals have made full recoveries from COVID-19, while the country has recorded 15 deaths.
