Health Minister urges caution as COVID-19 cases continue to soar

Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has urged the public to observe strict safety measures, as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to grow rapidly in the Maldives.

The health minister made the remarks in a tweet posted following the detection of 137 new cases of COVID-19 on July 28, which is the highest daily figure recorded since the country moved to a new normal phase. The cases reported on July 28 include 92 Maldivians, which represents the highest daily figure of Maldivians infected with COVID-19 since the disease was first detected in the country in March.

In his tweet, Health Minister Ameen said the alarms of danger are getting louder by the day and urged the public to observe strict safety measures in order to stay safe from COVID-19. As such, he called on the public to wear masks, maintain physical distancing and to refrain from going out and meeting with people unless absolutely necessary.

As per the latest statistics from Health Protection Agency (HPA), the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives has now risen to 3,506. This includes 929 active cases and 2,547 recoveries. The country has recorded 15 deaths from COVID-19.

While mostly foreigners tested positive for COVID-19 during the early stages of the outbreak in the Maldives, the recent surge of cases has seen a sharp rise in the number of Maldivians infected with COVID-19. The rise in the number of locals infected with COVID-19 has been observed since lockdown restrictions were eased in the Greater Male’ Region.
