Maldives has recorded the highest daily number of COVID-19 cases in over three months, with the detection of 156 cases on August 1.
The latest statistics from Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed 156 cases were reported in the Maldives between 1800hrs on July 31 and 1800hrs on August 1. The cases include 134 Maldivians, 20 Bangladeshis, 1 Indian and 1 Sri Lankan.
This is the second highest daily figure of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives, only exceeded on April 30 when 179 cases were reported. This was also the highest number of Maldivians to contract COVID-19 in one day, exceeding the figure of 92 Maldivians who tested positive just 4 days earlier, on July 28.
While the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives has risen to 3,950, the number of active cases has risen to a record figure of 1,305. The active cases also include a record 72 patients requiring hospitalisation. Further, 17 people have died from COVID-19 in the Maldives, with the latest death recorded on August 1 when a 52-year-old woman passed away at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
In addition to Male' City, COVID-19 cases have been detected from 10 islands across the country since travel restrictions were lifted last month.
