Over 4,000 contacts traced from recent COVID-19 cases: HEOC

Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has revealed over 4,000 contacts have been traced from the recent surge of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of the HEOC Dr. Nazla Rafeeq said the COVID-19 situation in the Maldives is worsening at an alarming rate, with over 100 cases reported on each of the past three days. The spokesperson revealed over 4,000 contacts have been traced from the recent COVID-19 cases, while the number of small clusters has increased rapidly.

Dr. Nazla also revealed over 200 people who tested positive for COVID-19 are yet to be transferred to isolation facilities, due to logistical difficulties resulting from the increasing number of cases. She said efforts are ongoing to establish additional isolation facilities in resorts and guest houses. However, she noted the biggest challenge would be the lack of human resources to operate all the facilities across the country.

The spokesperson urged the public to take extra precautions in order to stay safe from COVID-19. As such, she urged the public not to go outside or meet people unless absolutely necessary and to observe personal safety measures at all times.
