Aasandha Company Limited has revealed an additional Maldivian transferred to India for advanced medical treatment has passed away. This is the fourth Maldivian to die in hospitals in India after they were sent for advanced medical treatment.
The state-owned company administering and managing the national health insurance scheme has been transferring critical care patients to India, under special arrangements made by the government of India amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest Maldivian who passed away were amongst the patients who travelled on June 29 which was the first batch of patients to be transferred to India.
Aasandha said all four patients had been critically ill even when they were transferred to hospitals in India. The three individuals who passed away earlier were critically ill cancer patients.
Aasandha has transferred over 200 patients to India under the special permit extended by the Indian government. The patients transferred to India will undergo treatment from Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital and Amrita Institute of Medical Science (AIMS) Hospital.
Meanwhile, eight Maldivians, including patients and aides, have tested positive for COVID-19 after they travelled to India.
