Over 3,500 test positive for COVID-19 in 60 days

Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has revealed over 3,500 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives in 60 days after the government eased restriction announced in the Greater Male' Region.

HPA revealed a total of 5,572 have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives with 78 testing positive in the past 24 hours. They include 46 Maldivians, 25 Bangladeshis, 4 Indians and 2 Sri Lankans in addition to an individual from Nepal. HPA further stated a total of 3,010 have now recovered with 90 recovering in the past 24 hours.

Maldives recorded the first case of COVID-19 on March 7 this year. Although the majority of people who first tested positive for COVID-19 included expatriates, the number of locals contracting the disease have increased recently. Maldives has recorded 22 COVID-19 related deaths thus far with over 100 testing positive for the virus each day.

Although the virus is often regarded as less dangerous than initially assumed, the number of people testing positive each day and the increasing number of people in critical condition are presenting causes for alarm. Authorities are urging the public to take individual responsibility to mitigate the spread of the virus in the country.
