Spread of COVID-19 expected to slow down by end of September

Public Health Expert Dr. Sheena Moosa has stated the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives is expected to slow down by the end of September.

Speaking at a programme aired as part of the campaign promoting individual responsibility towards containing the spread of COVID-19, Dr. Sheena said the second wave of COVID-19 cases in the Greater Male’ Region has exceeded initial projections. She said the trajectory of spread is now expected to hit its peak this month and begin slowing down by the end of this month.

The doctor further stated the healthcare system of the Maldives can cope with the surge of cases if it follows the current projections. However, she said a lot depends on how the public reacts to the increasing number of cases. She added the only way to effectively control the spread of COVID-19 is to ensure full compliance to the measures imposed by health authorities.

Maldives reported its first COVID-19 case on March 7. Since then, over 8,500 cases have been reported in the country, most of which have been reported from the Greater Male’ Region. 29 people have died from COVID-19 in the Maldives.
