Another 10 COVID-19 cases reported from Hoadehdhoo

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed another 10 COVID-19 cases have been detected from Hoadehdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The latest statistics of HPA revealed an additional 10 cases were reported from Hoadehdhoo on September 8, bringing the total number of active cases in the island to 35. 8 of the 10 new cases are direct contacts of other positive cases in the island, while the remaining 2 are secondary contacts.

With 35 active cases, Hoadehdhoo currently has the largest number of active cases in the Maldives apart from the Greater Male’ Region. 31 of the 35 active cases in the island belong to the same cluster.

Despite the increasing number of cases in Hoadehdhoo, Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has stated a community spread situation has not been declared in the island as most cases are from the same cluster. HEOC said efforts are ongoing to identify the source of infection for the first two individuals who contracted COVID-19 from the island.

Due to the COVID-19 situation in Hoadehdhoo, the neighbouring island of Madaveli, which is linked to Hoadehdhoo by a causeway, has also been brought under monitoring. Random sampling is being carried out in both islands, although no cases have been reported from Madaveli so far.
