Former Parliamentarian Ismail Zakariyya has passed away from COVID-19.
Zakariyya passed away on September 14, while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in Dharumavatha Hospital. His death was confirmed by his family on social media.
Zakariyya had previously served at the Parliament of the Maldives, representing Raa Atoll. He had also served the government for a long period of time, most recently serving at the sports ministry.
The death of the 79-year old former parliamentarian is the 33rd COVID-19 death recorded in the Maldives. So far, 26 Maldivians and 7 expatriates have passed away from COVID-19 in Maldives.
Maldives has reported 9,173 COVID-19 cases which include 1,809 active cases and 7,326 recoveries. Statistics from the HPA show that 25 islands and 32 resorts have active COVID-19 cases.
