Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has stated there is no community spread situation in Addu City despite the detection of several new COVID-19 cases in the city.
Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of HEOC Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq revealed 53 workers who had been brought from India for the development of the Police Academy in Addu City have tested positive for COVID-19. Dr. Nazla said all of them had tested positive from the exit samples taken at the end of the 14-day quarantine period upon arrival in the Maldives. She added all of them are asymptomatic and are generally in good health.
The spokesperson noted none of the workers who tested positive for COVID-19 had met with other people as they had been undergoing quarantine. Therefore, she said there is no danger of a community spread in Addu City.
128 workers were brought in from India on September 13 for the development of the police academy. 44 of them had tested positive for COVID-19 on September 29, while another 9 tested positive on September 30.
A total of 67 COVID-19 cases have so far been detected in Addu City. All 67 individuals who tested positive in Addu had been undergoing home quarantine after travelling to the city.
