Six islands under monitoring after a police officer tested positive for COVID-19

Six islands have been put under monitoring after a police officer in Kulhudhuffushi City tested positive for COVID-19.

Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said the police officer who tested positive from Kulhudhuffushi had travelled to five other islands. As such, she revealed Baarah, Dhihdhoo and Hoarafushi in Haa Alifu Atoll, Kurinbee in Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll have been put under monitoring, in addition to Kulhudhuffushi. She noted entry and exit from these islands have been banned until further notice.

The spokesperson also revealed HEOC has requested action to be taken against an individual who had travelled to a containment site in Addu City without permission and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. Dr. Nazla said the site was being contained after 53 Indian workers who were brought in for the development of the police academy in Addu City had tested positive for COVID-19. Noting the individual who had travelled to the site with the positive cases did not have the permission to enter the site, the spokesperson said the case has been submitted to Maldives Police Service for investigation.

A total of 377 samples were taken for testing after tracing the contacts of the workers who tested positive. However, HEOC has not yet declared a community spread situation in Addu City.
