Maldives National University (MNU) has stated the antibody test study launched in the Greater Male’ Region is expected to be completed within 4 weeks.
MNU launched antibody testing as part of a study aimed to identify the percentage of the people in the community who have had past exposure to the virus and recovered. MNU had said all participants of the study are under the age of 18 although it will later be expanded to test people of all ages. MNU stated Rapid Response Team (RRT) will be collecting blood samples for the study.
Speaking at a preconference held at the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC), Dean of Research at MNU Dr. Raheema Abdul Raheem said it is collaborating with the Ministry of Education and schools to facilitate sampling. Dr. Raheema acknowledged and appreciated the support received from parents in conducting the study. She said the study adheres to WHO guidelines and safety standards, adding the study will allow Health Protection Agency (HPA) to better its policies and review its guidelines.
While the Maldives has begun antibody testing, HPA has also issued permission to Medtech Maldives to carry out rapid antigen testing. Additionally, Medtech has been requested to carry out PCR testing to ensure results if rapid antigen testing shows a negative result.
