Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has revealed the death of a staff member of Kandima Maldives who passed away due to COVID-19 has been submitted to Maldives Police Service (MPS) for further investigation.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) began testing tourists and staff at Kandima Maldives after a 60-year-old employee of the resort who had passed away on October 30, subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. Revealing latest information on the case, Spokesperson of HEOC Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said a team from HEOC visited the resort on November 2 to look into the matter. She said following deliberations on the report prepared by the team upon the visit, the Director General of Public health Maimoona Aboobakuru has decided to submit the case to MPS for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), launched an investigation into the case, citing possible negligence by the management of the resort. The family of the deceased claimed the resort management refused to facilitate his travel to seek any medical attention. However, the resort denies all allegations.
Kandima has recorded the largest number of COVID-19 cases from a single resort in the Maldives. Dr. Nazla said measures are being taken to contain the spread in the island.
