45 workers of a subcontractor working at VIA test positive for COVID-19

45 employees of a subcontractor working at Velana International Airport (VIA) have tested positive for COVID-19.

Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said the workers who tested positive were employees of China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC). Dr. Nazla revealed all workers were expatriates. She added contact tracing of all 45 workers are currently ongoing.

Furthermore, Dr. Nazla revealed a sample which had initially tested positive from Addu City on November 4 have subsequently been declared inconclusive. Therefore, she stated efforts are underway to obtain a second sample from the individual to confirm the result.

The spokesperson further noted the case has revealed violations of home quarantine regulations set by Health Protection Agency (HPA). However, she said there is currently no indication of a community spread of COVID-19 in Addu City.
