Claims of a planned attack on a children’s evening are false: MPS

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated claims that there was a planned attack on a children’s evening to be held in Thimarafushi, Thaa Atoll are false.

MPS made the statement after some media outlets circulated information that the terrorist activity which had been thwarted by MPS on November 11 was targeted on a children’s evening which was to be held in Thimarafushi.

MPS stated the police operation into the planned terrorist activity is still ongoing, adding further information regarding the operation will be disclosed to the public soon. MPS called on the media not to spread any information which have not been verified by authorities, considering the nature of the case.

In an interview with PSM News, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz revealed 6 people have been arrested in operation, all of whom are local males. Riyaz revealed a vessel has been captured within the seas of Kaafu Atoll as part of the operation, and an inspection is currently ongoing in some other locations.

MPS had earlier revealed the alleged act of terrorism was planned by extremist elements.
