Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula has stated strengthening transport operations and increasing connectivity plays a crucial role in driving economic development. The minister made the remarks while speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the cargo ferry service between Thinadhoo and Tuticorin, India.
Speaking at the ceremony, Transport Minister Nahula said transport is a crucial factor which dictates the pace of economic development. In this regard, she noted strengthening the transport system of the Maldives and increasing connectivity with neighbouring countries will help to provide efficient commercial services and strengthen economic activities.
Noting President Ibrahim Mohmaed Solih had pledged to establish cargo ferry services from India to the northern and southern commercial ports of the Maldives, Transport Minister Nahula said the inauguration of the cargo ferry service in Thinadhoo would bring several benefits to businesses in the southern atolls. She said the service will help to improve the profit margin of local businesses and lower the price of goods for the public.
The transport minister also highlighted the establishment of the national shipping line, Maldives State Shipping (MSS), was an important decision taken to boost economic development. She added the establishment of MSS is also a major boost to the efforts to develop the maritime sector of the Maldives.
Cargo ferry service between Tuticorin, Thinadhoo and Addu City was launched by MSS. Another cargo ferry service is also operated between Tuticorin and Kulhudhuffushi City.
