An individual who returned from the UK tests positive for COVID-19

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed an individual who travelled to Maldives from UK has tested positive for COVID-19.

Revealing information about the case, HPA said the individual is a relative of a family in the wedding cluster. So far, 41 guests of a wedding reception held in Male’ on December 20 have tested positive for COVID-19. However, HPA noted the individual returned to Maldives after the wedding and was not required to quarantine considering the rules in place during the travelled dates.

HPA further said he tested for COVID-19 after developing symptoms and highlighted it is unclear whether the strain of COVID-19 present in the individual’s body is of the new type which is spreading in UK. HPA did not reveal any further details of the individual.

Meanwhile, HPA announced new measures are being taken to safeguard the country from the spread of COVID-19 through a variant of the coronavirus which has been accelerating the spread of the disease in the UK. HPA stated all locals returning from the UK and individuals arriving from the UK on a work visa are required to undergo home quarantine for 10 days upon arrival. This also includes individuals who have visited the UK within the last 14 days before arrival in the Maldives, or individuals who have transited in the UK for over 12 hours.
