Maldives records 51st COVID-19 death, along with 108 new cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed an 86-year-old Maldivian male has passed away from COVID-19.

HPA said the male had passed away on 1627hrs on January 24 while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the DH11 facility of Dharumavantha Hospital. This is the 51st COVID-19 death recorded in the Maldives. So far, 43 Maldivians and 8 expatriates have passed away from COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Meanwhile, HPA also revealed 108 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the Maldives between 1800hrs on January 23 and 1800hrs on January 24. This includes 79 cases from the Greater Male’ Region, 23 cases from operational resorts and 5 cases from inhabited islands in the atolls.

With the latest update in cases, the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives has risen to 14,993. This includes 1,086 active cases, 13,849 recoveries and 51 deaths. There are currently 80 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment at hospitals or medical facilities.

COVID-19 cases have been on the rise once again since late December. The 108 cases detected on January 24 was the highest daily number recorded in the Maldives since November.
