Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirms the detection of 215 new cases of COVID-19 on February 1.
As per the latest statistics of HPA, 215 new cases were detected in the Maldives between 1800hrs on January 31 and 1800hrs on February 1. This includes 159 cases from the Greater Male’ Region, 8 cases from inhabited islands in atolls, 20 cases from operational resorts, 27 cases from non-operational resorts and one case from safaris. This was the first time the daily figure crossed 200 since September 1 last year.
With the latest update, the total number of cases reported in the Maldives has risen to 16,056, including 1,807 active cases. There are currently 184 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment in hospitals or medical facilities. A total of 52 people have passed away from COVID-19 in the Maldives, including 44 locals and 8 expatriates.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) on February 2, Public Health Expert Dr. Sheena Moosa said the Maldives is currently under a high risk situation, as daily numbers are exceeding projected numbers. Expressing concern over the growing number of patients requiring hospitalisation, Dr. Sheena called on the public to adhere to the safety measures imposed by HPA.
