Total recovery of tourism possible by mid-2021: Tourism Minister

Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated the Maldivian tourism industry can recover to pre-COVID-19 levels by mid-2021.

The tourism minister revealed the Maldives welcomed 4,300 tourists on February 7, which resembles the progress the tourism industry has achieved since borders were reopened on July 15 last year. The minister stated a total recovery of the tourism industry is likely to be achieved by mid-year, especially with the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination initiative.

Ministry of Tourism and the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) have been conducting various marketing campaigns across the world to promote the Maldives as a tourist destination. This includes familiarization trips, travel trade fairs, road shows and joint marketing campaigns with airlines and tour operators.

As per the latest statistics of the tourism ministry, over 100,000 tourists have visited the Maldives during the first 38 days of 2021. A total of 109,219 tourists have visited the Maldives this year, as of February 7, including 92,103 tourists in January and 17,116 tourists during the first 7 days of February.
