Ministry of Education has stated school sessions of grades 6 and below in the Greater Male’ Region will be conducted online for the next two weeks.
The education ministry said the school sessions for grades 6 and below in the Male’ area will be conducted online from February 14 until February 25. The ministry said the decision was taken upon the instruction of Health Protection Agency (HPA) due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the capital. The education ministry has also suspended preschool and nursery classes in the Male’ area, starting from February 2.
School sessions resumed for the ongoing academic year on January 10, with high-level safety measures in place to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. As such, classrooms are arranged with social distancing measures, while students and teachers are required to wear face masks. A certain period of every session is also allocated for handwashing and other personal hygiene measures. However, with the reopening of schools, some students and teachers have tested positive for COVID-19.
Schools were first closed in the Maldives due to COVID-19 on March 12 last year. Although, sessions for higher grades had resumed later last year, sessions for grade 6 and below had not resumed until this year.
