Over 124,000 tourist arrivals recorded this year

Ministry of Tourism has revealed over 124,000 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year.

As per the statistics of the tourism ministry, a total of 124,753 tourists visited the Maldives between January 1 and February 11 this year. Although this is a 45.6 percent decrease on the number of arrivals recorded during the same period last year, it represents a sharp rise in the number of tourist arrivals recorded since the reopening of borders in July last year.

According to statistics, Russia have contributed the largest number of tourists to the Maldives this year, with 27,041 tourists. This is 22.2% of all tourist arrivals recorded this year. India is a close second on this list, with 26,292 arrivals this year. Meanwhile, the third highest number was contributed by Ukraine with 8,867.

The average daily number of arrivals recorded in January was 2,971. The average for February so far is 2,968.

Ministry of Tourism has set a target of 1.5 million tourist arrivals for this year. The tourism ministry stated the COVID-19 vaccination drive launched in the Maldives is expected to boost the number of tourist arrivals in the remainder of the year.
