Maldives Police Service (MPS) has warned force will be used to disperse gatherings which violate the orders of Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Speaking at a press conference held at Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC), Chief Superintendent of Police Abdulla Shareef noted gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited in the Greater Male’ Region, as per the orders of HPA. Shareef said the protests conducted by the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) violates the HPA orders and risks the safety and well-being of the public. He warned that force will be used to disperse gatherings.
Speaking further, Shareef said the leaders of PPM and PNC have been repeatedly instructed not to conduct such gatherings during this time, as COVID-19 is spreading rapidly across the country. He said MPS is closely monitoring the political activities conducted during this time, and reporting information to Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
As per the circular signed by Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru and published on February 12, the maximum number of people who can gather in a public space in the Male’ area is 10. Gatherings of more than 10 people will only be allowed under special circumstances, as permitted and instructed by HPA. The circular stated the order will be enforced and monitored by Maldives Police Service (MPS).
HPA has tightened restrictions in the Greater Male’ area once again, following a new wave of COVID-19 cases in the country. As such, effective from February 12, a vehicle ban has been imposed in the capital from 1800hrs until 0600hrs. However, individuals are allowed to be out on foot until 2300hrs.
