President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced plans to develop an international airport in Huvadhu Atoll during the ongoing presidential term.
Speaking at a meeting held with the people of Huvadhu Atoll, as part of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s campaign for the upcoming local council elections, President Solih revealed the government plans to develop an international airport in Huvadhu Atoll before the end of his current presidential term. However, he said an island has not yet been allocated for airport development. He did not disclose any further details on the project.
Four international airports are currently operated in the Maldives, including Velana International Airport (VIA), Gan International Airport, Maafaru International Airport and Hanimaadhoo International Airport. In addition to the planned development of another international airport in Huvadhu Atoll, the government has commenced preparations for the development of several domestic airports across the Maldives. Some of the projects are already ongoing, including the development of Faresmaathoda Airport in Huvadhu Atoll.
Speaking further on development projects to be carried out in Huvadhu Atoll, President Solih noted the second phase of the high-speed ferry network project will see high speed ferry services launched in Huvadhu Atoll. He said the service is expected to be launched next year.
The President further noted the government has spent over USD 10 million on PSIP projects in Huvadhu Atoll over the last two years. He added over USD 900,000 was issued as income support allowance to 989 people from Huvadhu Atoll amid the COVID-19 pandemic, while a further 18 businesses from the atoll were disbursed USD 2 million as SME recovery loans.
