Current measures not effective in bringing down rate of COVID-19 spread: TAG

The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has stated current restrictive measures imposed in the Maldives has not been effective in bringing down the rate of COVID-19 transmission in the country.

Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed from TAG said the current wave of COVID-19 spreading in the Maldives is more dangerous than previous waves. Dr. Shaheed said the restrictive measures currently imposed in the Maldives seem to have little to no effect in bringing down the rate of spread. As such, he noted the daily numbers have not gone down, while the rate of hospitalization also remains alarmingly high.

Dr. Shaheed further expressed concern that despite the continued spread of the disease, daily activities have not changed. He warned that measures would need to be tightened if the rate of spread does not come down.

Daily numbers of COVID-19 cases have been alarmingly high for nearly two months. HEOC has warned another lockdown may be necessary to control the spread of the disease.
