MTCC begins survey of Zone 1 under Integrated National Public Ferry Network

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the survey of islands in Zone 1 of the Integrated National Public Ferry Network to be established across the Maldives.

MTCC stated the survey is conducted to allocate the sites for the proposed development of ferry terminals and ferry stops under the project. MTCC said ferry terminals will be developed in 5 islands of Zone 1, while ferry stops will be developed in the rest of the islands in the zone.

Zone 1 of the National Public Ferry Network includes islands in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani Atoll. MTCC began the survey with islands in Haa Alifu Atoll. The survey is conducted in association with the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

The proposed ferry network classifies six central regions, as identified in the National Spatial Plan (2020-2040), and would provide two separate networks for passenger transit and movement of goods and services within and in between the regions—linking maritime transport with land and air transport. The ferry network would connect islands within the areas and between areas via three types of links; commute links, non-commute links and highway links.
