Maldives receives 12,000 doses of vaccine through COVAX

Maldives has received 12,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine through the COVAX Facility.

The COVAX Facility was established to ensure fair and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccine to all countries around the world. COVAX is an initiative of World Health Organisation (WHO), Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunisation (GAVI) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Under the COVAX Facility, the Maldives has received 12,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine on March 7. COVAX had also previously granted 100,000 syringes and other vaccination equipment to the Maldives.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccination programme in the Maldives on February 1, over 145,000 people have been vaccinated in the country. The mass vaccination drive was commenced with the donation of vaccines by India, with inoculation being carried out for locals and expatriates alike without discrimination. As a result, the Maldives has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world.
