Upgrade of Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital underway

The project to upgrade Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital to a tertiary hospital is officially underway.

The project to construct an extension building in Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital was contracted in January. The project was contracted to be completed in 7 months.

The foundation for the extension building was laid in a ceremony held on March 8. The foundation was officially laid by State Dignitary Aneesa Ahmed and Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem.

Speaking at the ceremony, Health Minister Naseem said the upgrade will resolve the difficulties faced due to lack of space in the hospital and will ensure the broadening of services. He added mobile laboratory services will be introduced at the hospital following the upgrade, allowing samples from other islands to be tested in Ungoofaaru.

The extension building of Ungoofaaru Hospital will be built up to three stories. The ground floor will include emergency rooms and radiology department, with CT scanning, X-ray, ultrasound, mammography and MRI services. The first floor will include two operation theatres and a laboratory, while the second floor will include a physiotherapy department and private rooms.

The total cost of the project is USD 4.7 million.
